REUTERS IN QUEBEC CITY TO STAY

(CMQC) After having employed a freelance journalist for four years in Québec City, the Reuters press agency has now opened a permanent office in the province's capital.

The impact created by the opening of this office may be felt at different levels. Apart from the immediate creation of three direct jobs - a photographer and a part-time researcher working along with a journalist - the work of the Reuters team in Québec will lead to increased media coverage in the region.

"In the past, I did 5 news briefs weekly on Québec events. We are now sending Reuters 5 to 10 daily news stories in French and 7 to 10 weekly in English", explains Patrick White who has seen his freelance status being changed into a full-time position.

White has also left Québec to follow a 12-month internship at Reuters' head office in London. Born in the region of Québec, Patrick White will resume his position in Québec for at least two years in the Fall of 1998.

Media coverage in Québec City will provide news to Reuters' International News and Online Canada Services as well as to the agency's other specialized services. Such coverage is also proof of Reuters' willingness to further develop its French language services.

A journalist - working week-ends - will soon be added to the team along with a sales representative whose mandate will be to develop the commercial possibilities of Reuters' Online specialized services.

Reuters has roughly 410 clients in the province of Québec, among these about 10 media and hundreds of enterprises that directly subscribe to specialized economic news services like Le Bulletin d'affaires Reuters, Reuters Health Line, Reuters Oddly Enough Report, Reuters Online Technology Report, Reuters-VARIETY Entertainment Report or Reuters/Wired Digital News Service

Such information, often highly strategic for an industry, is expensive but worthwhile as is shown by the number of clients Reuters has in Québec.

In 1996, Reuters' Online Services revenues have for the first time in the agency's history surpassed those of the News Services. A clear sign of the growing importance of the electronic media in the world economy.

With the opening of its Québec office, Reuters now operates 7 press offices in Canada and 29 altogether in North America. Moreover, it is the first international press agency that has opened a permanent office in the province's capital.
